International Changes in Industrial Innovation: Consequences for the Research System
Themengebiet: Management & Produktion
Kurzbeschreibung: Objectives: The major aim of the project is to investigate how new concepts of industrial knowledge creation are implemented in the different environments of the innovation system of the United States and Germany. This study explores the changes of industrial innovation, focusing on the down-sizing of R&D, internal changes in R&D organisation, linkages between R&D and other corporate functions, the increasing significance of markets and customers for the R&D decision processor, and the internationalisation processes. In doing so, the research pays particular attention to the driving forces which are motivating these trends, including the globalisation of markets, production and technology, the accelerating pace of innovation, the increasing need to link new innovations and technology to end-user markets. This study also explores the effects of the reorganisation and restructuring of industrial R&D on the broader R&D system including government R&D
institutions and universities. The project concentrates on the following goals:
1. To study the processes that companies in the United States and Germany are using to acquire technical knowledge and apply it to the development of new products, services and production processes.
2. To understand what accounts for leadership in this domain of business practice, to examine whether or how this has changed over time, and to understand the causes of these changes.
3. To analyse the implications of these changes for enterprises and for national systems of innovation in Germany and the US, and to develop recommendations for: industrial managers, science and technology policy-makers, university and public research institutions.
The main focus is a series of case studies of innovation practice in different national and sectoral contexts. The following sectors and technological fields are investigated: pharmaceuticals/ new therapeutics, advanced materials, telecommunications/ switching equipment, financial services/ home banking. The project has its linkages to research in Japan and Australia where case studies with overlapping questions are conducted by partner institutes.
